All Good Things… (Newcastle 3-0 Reading)

By: Prederick | April 5th, 2008

CrudIn all honesty, this was probably coming. Great as Reading’s form had been up until today, it had largely consisted of home fixtures (three out of five in March were at the Madjeski). And while Newcastle are a side that have redefined “dysfuctional” over the past few years, I remember when they were flirting with relegation thinking that they were too good to go down. For a flash, I almost believed that might not be true, but no, they are. As maligned as Martins, Owen and especially Viduka are, all three are still (theoretically, at least) good strikers, and could flourish on the right team. All three could walk into Reading’s starting 11 as well (Lita always struck me as a poor man’s Martins anyway).

So we lost. Newcastle dominated pretty much every aspect of the game, their finishing was clinical, et cetera, et cetera. I’m not downbeat though. Newcastle have always been a mediocre-to-good team who love to underperform. Nevertheless, Reading are still six points off the drop and head for the safety of the Madjeski again next week with a chance to almost certainly send down Fulham who never win away.

I’m really caught about this. I’d almost like it to be a draw, but a point does neither team any good. Both could desperately use all three, and as much affection as I have for U.S.A. FC, they’re going down. And I don’t want Reading to join them.

Oh, and Stephen Hunt has a new haircut. This is what qualifies for news at the butt end of the table.
