Mills to request transfer? Sunderland in for Shane?By: Ben | June 28th, 2011
Word on the street and in every paper is that Matt Mills is set to have talks with Brian McDermott today regarding his future. If you believe what you read, then our captain will reject a new contract of an estimated £20,000 a week in an attempt to force through a move to Premiership. Mills is keen to ply his trade in the top flight (apparently), and with just one more year left on his contract, the club could be forced into selling him this summer with Wolves and Blackburn waiting in the wings. For me, I’m not so sure. Mills has never expressed his desire to move publicly, and on Twitter seems happy enough always talking about the club. I think the sway of the captain’s armband could keep him with us, and I feel he’d be better suited to Championship football rather than a team who flirt with relegation each year. Maybe some more light will be shed tomorrow.
The other big Reading story is the recent speculation that free spending Sunderland are ready to make the first move for Shane Long. Steve Bruce is reportedly ready to offer £7m for our Irish star. Now, how Connor Wickham is worth £13m at 18 years old, and 25 goal machine, full international Long is worth just £7m is slightly baffling and if we were in a better situation contract wise, I’m sure we’d laugh that amount off. But with his contract set to expire in 12 months, it’s likely we’ll take it. But then, Sigurdsson went for £6.5m just months after signing a new contract, so maybe Madejski needs to sort his transfer policy out. Hmmm.
In a bit, up the Royals.
