Well, It’s Been A Interesting Week
By: Prederick | September 3rd, 2008The first good news, as far as i’m concerned, is that the rumor mills were wrong and the club didn’t end up having to sell Stephen Hunt or Kevin Doyle, two players who undoubtedly will be important to the club’s drive for promotion again. The latter of the pair proved his worth just before the transfer window closed, personally bringing Reading back from 2-1 down to Crystal Palace to win 4-2.

Needless to say, I am pleased, the win coming on the back of a 5-1 crushing of Luton Town in the League Cup. Now, while beating a League Two club isn’t exactly worthy of praise, it has certainly been an exciting week to be watching Reading’s attack. Three games and 11 goals for, but on the downside, three games and seven goals against. The match against Luton was the last time we looked reasonably sound in defense, and that wasn’t exactly our first team, nor was it exactly top-level competition.
Still, Reading are in 6th, and looking good. Obviously, future improvement on the away record will be needed, but if we can make the Madjeski the fortress we need it to be, promotion will be on the cards.
For the future, we can look towards a reuniting with Dave Kitson and Ibrahima Sonko (who left for the Premiership last Friday) as we’ll be taking on Stoke City in the next round of the Carling Cup. Given that Stoke should be focusing all of their attention on the Premiership, even at this early stage, we may sneak one.
In the meantime, good luck to our Irish internationals, Kevin Doyle, Stephen Hunt and Shane Long as they join up with the Republic of Ireland squad for World Cup qualifying trips to Georgia and Montenegro.
